It all started as most fairytale-like stories do: in the local office of a Congressman. As I stepped into the room, you shuffled over and shook my hand. Looking into those bright blue eyes made my heart flutter. Fate? Love at first sight? I’m not sure, but I was instantly smitten.
On our first “date,” tucked into a corner at Zaza’s, after discussing everything from Gossip Girl to travel to religion, the little voice inside my head kept saying, “Oh my God, he gets it! He wants the life that I do!” After all, a good indication of compatibility was being the only two crazy, soon-to-be college freshmen “working” that summer.
As we each took our paths in life, our friendship solidified, cheering each other on from afar, maybe a little (okay, a lot) hopeful our paths would cross again. That foundation of friendship remains—you always were, and will be, my best friend. When our paths did cross again, it felt like we had never been apart.
You’re kind, thoughtful, dedicated, and silly. My partner in crime. Life with you is an adventure—big and small. From coffee dates in the morning to battleground tours in Cyprus, anything with you is wonderful. Your infectious smile can always brighten my day.
Growing up in Guanajuato, San Miguel has always been my favorite place—a little piece of paradise. As girls often do, I’d dream of one day getting married there. After taking Hans to meet my family in Mexico, and after a margarita or two overlooking San Miguel at sunset, I couldn’t help but plant the seed: “Wouldn’t it be amazing to get married here?” I guess dreams really do come true.
My love, cheers to building the life we’ve always dreamed of—and celebrating with you all! I’m thrilled to share this special place with everyone.
It started where all good love stories do, the district office of an Arkansan Congressman. I distinctly remember the first day of our internship in 2013. I was making small talk with the typical crew of interns you'd see in a Republican congressional office (a bunch of white dudes in khakis with hair that always looks wet), and then a girl walked into the room, late. She was incredibly beautiful, had dimples when she smiled, and had a blue dress on that lit up the government-furnished room. Little did I know that after spending time together that summer, she'd be making me late to things for the rest of my life.
We went to separate universities, always stayed in touch, and deep down I always knew she was the one that got away. After bouncing around to different cities for years, I finally settled in Washington, DC, which in my mind was "right next to" New York City. Maria, being a fancy New York person now, I assumed was too busy going to fashion week and the Times Square M&Ms store, or whatever New Yorkers do, to hang out, but I took a chance. We got to chatting, and, frankly, it was like we were never apart. Even through memes, music recommendations, and me trying to impress her with my terrible Spanish, I could tell the girl I had fallen in love with was still there. Eventually, we spent time together during Thanksgiving, and we've been inseparable since. The only stipulation she gave me was to not text her all the type because she's "not like that." Little did I know that this girl would constantly be blowing up my phone and Instagram simultaneously until the end of my days.
I always joke that the first and last negotiation I'll win was getting Maria to move to DC, or as her friends call it "the suburbs." Not that I needed more convincing, but spending our first few weeks together in DC reaffirmed that she's the person I wanted to spend forever with. Despite living in 540 sq/ft and both working from home for years, spending time with her is my favorite activity. She is an incredible chef, more-or-less just moves dirt around when she "cleans," and fills our microhome with shipments of clothes and haft-drunk cups of tea. She brings so much joy to my life, and she's the only copilot I could ever want.
Our story has been more than a decade in the making, but there are many more decades to come, and we're excited to share them with you all.
